Subject: Highlights of Emergency Responses for November 2009: 24 of 64 total calls.

 

November 1, 2009:  Crews responded to a reported motor vehicle collision.  Upon arrival, an SUV was found rolled over on to its right side.  Three individuals were outside walking around.  All Pt refused transport and care.

 

November 1, 2009:  Crews responded to a residence for sick call. Upon arrival with OCEMS, the patient was located lying on sofa.  The North Bay paramedic assisted OCEMS with loading and moving pt to ambulance and starting an IV.  The patient was transported by OCEMS for further evaluation and treatment.

 

November 2, 2009:  Crews responded to a patient complaining of breathing problems. Upon arrival with OCEMS, the patient was found on the toilet sitting in a tripod, appearing to be in moderate respiratory distress.  The patient was administered Oxygen and the cardiac monitor was applied.  The patient was transported by OCEMS, with one firefighter, for further evaluation and treatment.

 

November 7, 2009: Crews were dispatched automatic aid for structure fire in Destin.  Cancelled while en route; Pumper 8 assigned to Destin Station 10 for coverage.

 

November 11, 2009:  Crews responded to a reported motor vehicle collision involving a pick-up truck and an 18-wheeler; East Niceville was dispatched for extrication back-up.  Upon arrival, Assistant Chief 8 verified the crash and that one patient was entrapped.  On the recommendation of an off-duty paramedic, a helicopter was requested.  The helicopter was launched and a landing zone was established by Chief 8.   Pumper 8 and Engine 8 crews, along with Engine 13 crew, began extrication; Battalion 8 arrived on-scene and was assigned to supervise the extrication.  Gulf Flight 1 landed and walked to the extrication scene.  Okaloosa County EMS provided patient care during the extrication process.  Upon extrication, the patient was transferred to the Gulf Flight crew for transportation to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola.  The scene was cleaned up and all units were released.

 

 

November 12, 2009:  Crews responded to a dispatched to a report of an unconscious patient.  Upon arrival, OCEMS was on scene and packaging the patient.  While jogging, the patient related passing out, falling and striking their head.  Patient was loaded for transport and the North Bay paramedic started an IV, drew blood per protocol and conducted a blood glucose test.  OCEMS transported for further evaluation and care.

 

November 14, 2009:  Crews responded to a patient complaining of breathing problems.  Oxygen was administered, the cardiac monitor was applied, an IV was unsuccessfully attempted and a blood glucose reading was conducted by the North Bay paramedic.  OCEMS transported.

 

November 15, 2009:  Crews responded to a patient complaining of breathing problems.  Oxygen was administered, cardiac monitor applied, IV was started, blood sugar was checked and blood was drawn per protocol.  OCEMS transported.

 

November 15, 2009:  Crews responded to a patient reported to be experiencing syncopal episodes.  ALS interventions were started, including: blood sugar level, IV and blood draw per protocol.  OCEMS transport the patient for definitive care. 

 

November 17, 2009:  Crews responded to a sick call.  The patient was experiencing vertigo and sickness of unknown origin.  The patient was carried to stretcher in a sheet splint and loaded into ambulance; OCEMS then placed patient on cardiac monitor and Oxygen while a North Bay paramedic started an IV and blood draw per protocol.  OCEMS transported for further evaluation and care.

 

November 18, 2009:  Crews responded to a possible Cardio Vascular Accident/Stroke.  ALS interventions were initiated; including: Oxygen, cardiac monitor, blood sugar level check, IV and blood draw per protocol.  Patient transported by OCEMS

 

November 18, 2009:  Crews responded to a patient having seizures.  ALS interventions were begun; including: Oxygen and cardiac monitor.  OCEMS transported the patient for further evaluation and definitive care. 

 

November 19, 2009:  Crews responded to a patient complaining of chest pain. Patient stated they were “hanging out” inside the house when he started experiencing chest pain.  ALS interventions were initiated; including: cardiac monitor, IV, blood sugar check and blood draw per protocol.  OCEMS transported the patient.

 

November 22, 2009:  Crews responded to a patient experiencing seizures.  A Blood sugar check by North Bay paramedic; further care and transport provided by OCEMS.

 

November 23, 2009:  Crews responded to a patient complaining of chest pain.  ALS interventions were initiated, including: cardiac monitor, Oxygen and blood sugar level check.   OCEMS transported.

November 23, 2009:  Crews responded to a fire alarm activation from the Sterling House.  Upon investigation, it was determined that there was a malfunctioning detector. 

 

November 24, 2009:  Crews responded to reported patient suffering a traumatic injury at the Mid-Bay Bridge By-pass construction area.  Upon arrival, the crew found a patient with trauma to the pelvic/lower abdominal area due to being pinned by a 1500 lb. concrete wall section. The patient had been freed before North Bay arrival.   The patient was treated for abdominal/pelvic trauma.  ALS interventions were initiated, including: Oxygen and two IV’s.  The patient was transported by OCEMS to the helicopter landing zone where the patient was subsequently transported to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola via Gulf Flight.

 

November 24, 2009:  Crews responded to a patient complaining of possible heart problems.  North Bay paramedic attempted an IV, subsequently established by OCEMS.  OCEMS transported the patient.

 

November 26, 2009:  Crews responded to a possible brush fire.  Upon arrival, it was determined to be a small pile of leaves burning.  The residents were informed of the Florida Division of Forestry rules and the fire was extinguished.

 

November 27, 2009:  Crews responded to a collision involving a vehicle and an individual on a bicycle.  The patient from the bicycle reported being struck by the vehicle and then striking their head on the asphalt.    We advised the patient of the protocol for head/neck/back injury - but the patient refused to have a cervical collar applied and refused to be transported if made to wear a collar.  EMS reinforced the advice of wearing a neck collar, but the patient continued to refuse.  A written refusal was obtained from the patient and OCEMS transported the patient for definitive assessment and care.

 

November 27, 2009:  A patient presented at the fire station complaining of chest pain.  An evaluation of the cardiac rhythm indicated the patient met cardiac alert criteria.  ALS interventions were initiated, including: Oxygen, two IV’s, nitroglycerin administered.  OCEMS transported for definitive evaluation and treatment.

 

November 1, 2009:  Crews responded to a patient complaining of chest pains.  The patient stated that the pain, 10 out of 10, had been coming and going for a few days. ALS interventions were initiated, including: cardiac monitor, Oxygen, two IV’s and nitroglycerin was administered.  A cardiac alert was called and the patient was transported by OCEMS for definitive care.

 

November 28, 2009:  Crews responded mutual aid to a reported garage fire in East Niceville.  Cancelled enroute.

 

November 30, 2009:  Crews responded mutual aid to a reported structure fire in the City of Niceville.  Cancelled enroute.

Fire dispatches this month include: one structure fire in Destin on November 7; two structure fires in Niceville on November 13 and November 30, an illegal burn in district on November 26; and a garage fire in East Niceville on November 28

 

 We were not dispatched out-of-district for Advanced Life Support during the month of November.

 

Tower 8 was removed from service due to an electrical problem; maintenance performed at the 10-8 facility in Walton County.
